AMVETS has a long history of advocating for Veterans Treatment Courts (VTCs), which started in 2008 with our then National Commander J.P. Brown, who worked with Judge Russell in Buffalo, New York on the creation of the first VTC. We are asking you to send the pre-filled support letter to your Congressman to ask them to become a co-sponsor – or you can delete and write your own message. Background on the bill: U.S. Reps. Jeff Denham (R-CA) and Charlie Crist (D-FL) recently introduced H.R. 4345, the Veterans Treatment Court Coordination Act, which tasks the Department of Justice and the VA to establish a program to provide grants, training, and technical assistance to help state, local, and tribal governments to develop and maintain veteran treatment courts (VTCs). VTCs are well-known for helping veterans in crisis who have committed a non-violent crime, by offering them counseling or treatment they may need instead of sending them into the criminal justice system. Currently, Veterans Treatment Courts are developed when local judges, police, local VA officials, veteran service organizations, prosecutors, public defenders, and other organizations agree to work together to support veterans in their community. There is not an existing framework or a single point of contact for those communities who are running a VTC, or for those wishing to establish one. This bill will provide the framework to access resources and technical assistance and does not appropriate any funds. Please take a moment and send the message to your Representatives, and help veterans by making it easier to set up veteran treatment courts across the nation.
