Partnership Overview
AMVETS Hawaii is honored to partner with James Campbell High School’s Freshman Success Academy to provide students with meaningful opportunities to serve veterans, military families, and the local community through volunteerism and civic engagement. Our goal is to help students develop leadership, compassion, teamwork, and a lifelong commitment to community service while making a positive difference in the lives of Hawaii’s veterans.
Veterans Appreciation Card-Making Project
Students will create handwritten cards to be presented to veterans residing in long-term care facilities, assisted living communities, VA programs, and hospitals across the Hawaiian Islands for Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Holidays, and Valentine’s Day. Suggested messages include words of gratitude, encouragement, and aloha. Students are encouraged to personalize cards with patriotic and Hawaiian-themed artwork.

Develops empathy, civic responsibility, communication skills, creativity, leadership, gratitude, and community engagement.
Warriors Ohana Garden Service Project
Students will participate in monthly or bi-weekly volunteer service days at the Warriors Ohana Garden located at the AMVETS West Oahu Veterans Center, 5001 Iroquois Avenue, West Loch Annex (JBPHH), Ewa Beach, Hawaii.
Volunteer Activities
Planting, watering, weeding, harvesting produce, composting, landscape beautification, building raised beds, painting garden structures, cleanup projects, and seasonal improvements.
Learning Outcomes
Students gain experience in environmental stewardship, teamwork, sustainable gardening, leadership, healthy living, volunteerism, and community service.
Why This Partnership Matters
Handmade cards remind veterans that their service is remembered, especially during holidays. Garden service supports veteran wellness while giving students meaningful hands-on service opportunities.
